My Inspiration. My Passion. My Mission.

Approximately forty six children are diagnosed with cancer each day.

Cancer does not discriminate and is the leading cause of death by disease among U.S. children.

By the time my daughter finished the fifth grade, she'd already lost two friends to this disease.  Both were beautiful little girls, diagnosed with osteosarcoma in the third grade.

As a parent, I desperately needed something to help me explain the impending death of a child to my own child. There was an elephant in the room, and it was then that I realized that I would write a real story, about a real child's journey through cancer.

Our Story

When my daughter’s friend, Colleen, was dying, I desperately needed something to help me explain the impending death of a child to my own child. Most of the books I found dealt with the death of a grandparent or pet. It seemed the myriad of titles on the shelves shied away from the subject at hand: children with cancer, children dying.

There was an elephant in the room. It was then that I realized that I would write a real story, about a real child’s journey through cancer.

Colleen was an inspirational little girl. Unbeknownst to her, she was teaching us the greatest lessons about life, while she faced the possibility of death. Watching her journey through cancer made me stronger, and it made my daughter stronger. It encouraged me to grow and share in ways I had never imagined possible – such as writing this book.

Cancer changed my life when it took my father away from me over twenty years ago, but it gave me something in return. For every ounce of my being that despises this horrible disease, my faith has grown exponentially. For every person I know, or hear about, who is diagnosed with cancer, my compassion for them and for their families inspires me. For every person who reads this book, my mission is to offer hope.

With hope,
Jill

The Book

My love and thanks to my daughter, Katie, as it was through her eyes that I saw the elephant, and the need for a book like this.

Colleen was an extremely brave girl who whose journey through cancer not only inspired this book, it inspired a movement.
